PART HISTORY... PART ENTERTAINMENT...

AS TECHNOLOGY EVOLVES, SO DO THE WAYS TO USE IT FOR FUN AND EDUCATION.

IN SYDNEY, A NEW VIDEO GAME HAS BEEN LAUNCHED WHICH MAKES PLAYERS LITERALLY RUN THROUGH THE STREETS OF OLD SYDNEY, AS THEY EXPLORE THE PAST... AND RACE TO WIN.

---- The seedy underworld of Sydney's Darlinghurst.

It's the 1920s and the streets are awash with sly grog, prostitution and razor gangs...

Now, people in the inner-city suburb can experience those years through a new video game.
But in this one, the players have to run through the streets themselves.

Using GPS technology, the handheld console keeps track of where they are.

"YOUR HEALTH WILL REDUCE SO IF THAT HAPPENS YOU'LL NEED TO GO TO ST VINCENTS HOSPITAL TO RECOVER YOUR HEALTH // OH WOW"

GRAB DAVID 2:
YOU'RE ACTUALLY NAVIGATING THROUGH THE STREETS AND DECIDING WHICH LANEWAY TO DASH DOWN AND SO ON, SO IT'S KIND OF THIS MIXED REALITY
Videos like this one come up on the console at certain locations, providing a narrative.

"I'VE GOT A COUPLE OF BOTTLES IF YOU'RE WILLING TO PAY BUT I HAVEN'T GOT ALL DAY, I'M JUST CLOSING UP"

And at any moment there can be unexpected attacks by the notorious gangs.

"RAZOR ATTACK!"

GRAB RICHARD 1:
MANY OF THESE PLACES STILL EXIST AND AS YOU WALK AROUND AT NIGHT YOU CAN ALMOST FEEL LIKE THE GHOSTS OF THESE PEOPLE ARE WALKING THE STREETS

The historical research for the game has been detailed... and the project aims to teach the young residents about their neighbourhood.

GRAB RICHARD 2:
IT'S NOT JUST WHAT PEOPLE EXPERIENCE IN THEIR IMMEDIATE LIFE BUT HOW IT LIVES AND BREATHES OVER TIME

GRAB DAVID 1:
THE IDEA OF YOU BEING LOCATED IN REAL SPACE AND BEING ABLE TO PULL DOWN INFORMATION RELEVANT TO WHERE YOU ARE IS THE KEY TO IT AND THIS IS THE NEW THING

The use of satellite technology for projects like this is increasing... and experts think it could soon become the way of the future for gaming.
